a holistic approach to optimizing occupational performance

what is occupational performance?

occupational performance is determined by the interaction between the person, environment, and occupation.

person:

- refers to the individual and their set of skills, abilities, qualities, and attributes

- a person is dynamic and always changing, developing, and adapting

environment:

- the context and setting where the person participates in an occupation

- there are multiple environmental factors (external to the person) that might be relevant and applicable; the environment can offer support and opportunities, and/or demands and constraints

occupation:

- meaningful tasks and activities engaged in throughout the lifespan; three areas of occupations are:

  1. - self-care: routines and activities that meet personal needs, and contribute to health and wellness

  2. - productivity: activities that make a contribution to the community; this changes over the lifespan and can include school, volunteering, employment, and parenting/caregiving

  3. - leisure: activities that are fun, relaxing, and provide enjoyment
